Lasers are a new modality for the rapid, gentle removal of unwanted hair. Lasers are not for everyone, and their proper use requires great expertise. If you're contemplating laser hair removal let the experts at Maryland Cosmetic Laser Institute decide if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure.

To be considered for this procedure the absolute requirement is that one's hair must be darker than the surrounding skin.  Tanned patients with light hair are not candidates. Tanned patients with dark hair should wait until their tan fades before they are treated.

Our Laser - LightSheer™
LightSheer™ by Coherent Technologies

The Maryland Cosmetic Laser Institute is proud to offer a great new laser hair removal system from Coherent technologies known as LightSheer™. The LightSheer Diode Laser System is indicated for the treatment of unwanted or excessive hair on your body. It was developed from research performed at the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, under the direction of R. Rox Anderson, M.D. of Harvard Medical School. The near-infrared laser energy produced by the system is selectively absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft as well as the surrounding follicle, causing thermal destruction of several key anatomic sites. Consequently, the hair's re-growth is significantly impeded or eliminated.

In February, 1998, the LightSheer System was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hair reduction as well as the treatment of superficial leg veins. The system is manufactured by Palomar Medical Technologies and distributed by Coherent, Inc. A key component of the LightSheer System is the ChillTip™ cooling lens. It consists of a cold sapphire crystal through which the laser energy is focused. Its cooling action protects the epidermis from thermal damage, while the lens itself converges the laser light to deliver a high dose of energy deep into the skin to hair follicles.

With the ever-increasing popularity of laser hair removal, the ability to offer unsurpassed results to the largest variety of patients is crucial. The LightSheer Diode Laser System, with its unique combination of laser parameters and patented ChillTip protection, makes this a reality.

Immediately After The Procedure

After the laser hair removal process, the target area that has been treated by the laser system is cleansed. Most people can resume normal daily activities without any major disturbance. Of course you may experience potential red areas around the follicles, but this will disappear in a matter of minutes in a majority of cases. It is wise to protect the skin with sunscreen or clothing. Any potential exposure to ultraviolet radiation after this treatment is not advisable.

Do not be alarmed if for the first few weeks it seems like hair is growing in the treated areas. These should easily fall out. In the case that the hair does not fall out it might not have been in a treated area. If this occurs please feel free to consult any of our staff at Maryland Cosmetic Laser Institute. It is quite possible that your desired hair removal goals will not be accomplished in one treatment. Therefore, more treatments may be required in order to obtain the results desired, and will depend on hair density, hair color, and your hair growth cycle.
